STAR-CROSSED: Chelsea Gilligan Talks Getting to Play a Bad-Ass Alien Girl (video interview) (2014)

One would think that one has to watch out for the boys in high school, but when confronted with the likes of an alien teen girl, most human teen boys are simply out of their league. In the new CW series STAR-CROSSED, Chelsea Gilligan portrays Teri, an Atrian teen who has more than a few tricks up her sleeve. Not helping matters is the fact that Teri believes in every fiber of her being that her destined love is Roman (Matt Lanter), an Atrian boy destined to rule their people one day. Teri’s life would be perfect if the Atrians had never crash landed on Earth ten years ago; but they did, and they have been virtual prisoners on Earth ever since. However, with new government mandate ordering seven Atrians to participate in a pilot integration program, Teri’s chance to finally stretch her wings and exercise her power has come. Attending a human high school may be the last thing she wants to do, but it affords plenty of opportunities to get outside their internment camp and discover what the world has to offer. It may provide the long-awaited opportunity to prove to Roman of their destined love.

If only fate did not have other plans. Teri could not have known how Roman met Emery (Aimee Teegarden) that fateful day their spaceship crash landed on Earth and how that created a bond linking them that would never be broken. For Atrians, there is but one true love, and Roman knows he found his in Emery. So Teri is in for a rude awakening from her dream bubble once Roman and Emery are reunited at school and their bond more obvious than ever. But Teri is an Atrian and one that has a bit of power than when used can make her a formidable opponent. She is not about to give up on her chosen destiny – destiny and fate be damned.

In an exclusive interview from the set, star Chelsea Gilligan talked about how surprised she was to find that Teri was such a manipulative and bad-ass girl, as well how much fun it is to portray a character with a special ability:

With factions on both sides, Teri finds herself aligned with an Atrian faction known as the Trags. While she is not exactly enamored with the humans, she does not really mean them ill-will either. But with her family and some of her friends choosing to get involved in the resistance, Teri feels pulled to be a part of the action; and in her mind, it cannot be all bad if she gets to play with guns and have some fun.

As Chelsea laughingly noted, fans and viewers may be a bit off-put by Teri. Teri is just a girl that knows what she wants and is willing to do anything to get it and by any means necessary. Her abilities are just a means to achieving her goals and she figures it is her alien-given right to use them.

One would hope that over the course of the first season of STAR-CROSSED that Teri would learn a few strong lessons about working with the humans and not against them, but she has a long road ahead of her to see the error of her ways. She will be the one girl that everyone may love to hate. But all hope is not lost, there may be a road to redemption in her future, if she chooses it. Will her love for Roman be the key to reaching her, or the one thing that triggers a rage that no one will be able to stop?
