THE THIRST PROJECT (2012)

TP

In 2007, 8 enterprising and conscientious college students decided to do something to help alleviate the global water crisis and raised funds to buy a fresh-water well for a community in desperate need of water. Five years later and their combined efforts has created an outstanding organization that has raised over $2.6 million dollars, which has brought water to over 100,000 people. Founded by Seth Maxwell, The Thirst Project endeavors to educate students throughout the United States on how they can help raise awareness to help with this desperate need for one of life’s most basic necessities. Their goal is to conquer the global water crisis — one fresh-water well at a time.

At its third annual gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, hosted by Take Part (takepart.com), The Thirst Project not only honored the contribution of its hard-working volunteers, it also celebrated the efforts of Hollywood’s young elite who are willing to take the time to help raise awareness and funds for such a worthy cause. The gala was hosted by Pauley Perrette (NCIS) and Kirsten Vangsness (CRIMINAL MINDS) as they honored Chyler Leigh (GREY’S ANATOMY) and producer Nathan West. Among the evening’s special guests were: Jason Ritter (PARENTHOOD), Sarah Drew (GREY’S ANATOMY), Seychelle Gabriel (FALLING SKIES), Matthew Fahey (AWKWARD.), Cassie Scerbo (MAKE IT OR BREAK IT), Misha Crosby (THE LYING GAME), Dylan Riley Snyder (KICKIN IT), Dale Godboldo (“Thor”), Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt (BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN), Ryan Lee (“Super 8”), R. Brandon Johnson (SHAKE IT UP!), and actress Felicity Wren.

Taking a few minutes to talk about how they became involved with this remarkable charity and how the youth of today could become involved, each also talked about other causes worthy of attention that are close to their hearts. Then as a fun shout-out, the stars shared what is their current “guilty pleasure” or “obsession” on television this summer – and you are likely going to be very surprised with the hilarious answers they provided!

Water may not sound as sexy or dire as other charitable causes, but there is no disputing that it is the one essential thing that every human being on the planet must have. We may look around us and see vast amounts of water in our own personal lives as we turn on the kitchen or bathroom facets, look out the windows and see the sprinklers running, or gaze out a nearby ocean or lake; but for barren areas of Africa and the Middle East, clean water is not as abundantly available. Thus, it is more precious than one can imagine. It is also something that can be solved quite easily. Just by digging a well, there are underground water reservoirs that can be tapped into. It just takes a little money and ingenuity to make it happen.

Fortunately, The Thirst Project is bound and determined to bring clean water to these areas. Their passion and compassion is compelling and deserves our attention. In interviews with founder and president Seth Maxwell and Thirst Project honoree Shiran Witt, they describe how everyone can take part in this phenomenal goal:
